The Death of Liberalism?
7pm at Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union Room 294

Liberalism is a term that encompasses a broad range of political and economic currents. Whereas liberal reformists in Europe built social democratic and labor parties to fight for structural reforms, including nationalized health care, the brand of liberalism practiced in the U.S. has never been nearly so ambitious. The Democrats represent one of two wings of ruling class opinion, but for the last century have maintained the loyalty of liberals as a “lesser evil” to the Republicans. With a Democratic majority unwilling to pass any comprehensive reforms, the illusion of democrats representing working class interests is eroding. Even the piecemeal reforms passed in the 1930s and 1960s seem like a far off dream today. Come join the International Socialist Organization for a look at the politics of liberalism: past, present and future.

The Case for Socialism with Sherry Wolf
7pm at Portland State University, Smith Memorial Student Union Room 294

We live in a world of poverty, war, and environmental devastation. A world where living standards for working people plummet while an elite few enjoy lives of unbelievable wealth and power. Something different—an alternative to capitalism—is desperately needed. But what should replace it?

SHERRY WOLF, author of Sexuality and Socialism, proposes socialism. A society built from the bottom up through the struggles of ordinary people against exploitation, oppression, and injustice—one in which people come before profit. A society based on the principles of equality, democracy, and freedom.
